How often do we compare ourselves to others?

How often do we compare ourselves to others? We want the GOAT title like Serena, MJ, and LeBron. We strive for marriage goals like Russell and Ciara. Maybe that's too high; let me bring it down a bit. We want the best yard on the block like our neighbor. We want a house like the Jones family. We want to be promoted like our coworker. We want to drive a car like our big brother, or make good grades in school like our big sister.

Comparing oneself to others dates back to biblical times especially between siblings. One story in particular that comes to mind this morning is the story of two sisters: Mary and Martha. Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’”
Luke 10:41-42 (NIV)

Martha busied herself with cooking and cleaning, while Mary sat at Jesus' feet. Martha didn't like that too much. She thought Mary should've been helping her instead of just sitting. Mary was taking advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime: to learn from Jesus Christ himself. Jesus was physically in their house. Who wouldn't want to spend every second basking in His presence learning The One?

We can't be concerned about what others are doing. We must not get caught up in our perception of how far along people are in their journey vs where we wish we were. God can use us right where we are. He has positioned us for this moment in time. We must focus on serving Him with all of our heart, mind, and soul. We will run this race with one goal in mind, when He returns, we will hear Him say servant well done.

OptimisticallyKe....that's me
